MISSION

Heart and Hand Society is a cat rescue and sanctuary charitable organization whose mission is to eliminate cat overpopulation with the resulting euthanasia of excess animals, so that every cat finds a responsible home or, if feral, lives out their lives in a managed colony. Millions of cats in the United States and elsewhere are being euthanized due to lack of homes. The destruction of unwanted animals is inhumane, uncivilized, and a waste of taxpayer money. We reduce the numbers of homeless cats by adoption, by Trap-Neuter-Return for feral cats that are not adopted, and by educating and providing resources to the public for sterilization of owned cats, so that more kittens will not be produced. The means of reducing the overpopulation are through spay-neuter sterilization to prevent more births, and finding homes for cats and kittens that are born. Statistics show that spay-neuter sterilization is much more effective in reducing overpopulation than adoption, due to the fact that there are very few homes available for the number of cats born, since cats can reproduce very quickly and have many litters.

It is of utmost importance in reducing homeless cats that they be sterilized, whether they are owned or are unowned outdoor cats. We find responsible adopters for stray cats and kittens that we obtain from outdoors or from feral colonies, or from animal control facilites where they are slated for euthanasia. We do not take cats from the public, but offer information on how they can find homes for cats they want to surrender. We also offer information with problems that people have with their cats in order to dissuade them from surrendering them to animal control shelters where they are likely to be euthanized. We also operate a small sanctuary for cats that are either awaiting medical treatments to be put up for adoption, or are feral and not suitable for adoption but cannot be returned to their colony for various reasons such as destruction of their habitat by development and other causes. We also T-N-R cats in local colonies and offer the public education in T-N-R techniques and sterilizatioh resources.
